Traditions Fire Company & Museum

4th Annual Fire Muster and 2nd Annual Firefighters’ Olympics: 2008

Rules for each Firefighters’ Olympics event are listed on the following pages.

Here are the general rules for the overall event:

All teams must pay no later than May 16, 2008.  Make payments to Traditions Fire Company and Museum c/o fire muster team, 1136 South Stagecoach Place, Olathe, KS 66062.  If you have any questions please call Paul Dickman at 913-832-0145.

Cost:  If you or your department is bringing a fire truck to the event, the cost is only $40.00 per team ($10 per firefighter), and is a lower cost in consideration of travel costs.   If you or your department are not  bringing a fire truck to the event, the cost is $50.00 per team ($12.50 per firefighter).  This is also done to encourage departments to bring a fire truck to the fire muster and parade.  Exception: If a fire  department has 3 teams competing in the FF Olympics, then it only has to have one truck from the department—not 3 trucks. However, if you want to bring more than 1 truck you are encouraged and welcome to do so!  All of the money goes to buying trophies and plaques, and minimal supplies needed for the competition—no money is pocketed!

NEW THIS YEAR:  Each team that is competing MUST bring with them a 5th person who will not compete, and who will be dedicated to helping run the events as a safety person, time keeper, event coordinator, etc.  This 5th person will not compete, but will help run the events.  This 5th person does not need to be a firefighter—they can be a spouse, neighbor, friend, etc. This should help the FF Olympics run more smoothly.  There is no charge for this 5th person.

Attire:  All team members must wear a helmet while competing, which each individual is responsible for bringing.  Shirts:  Your choice, but remember that you will be representing your department.  Job/station t-shirts are appropriate and recommended, but no Co-Ed Naked Firefighting, Absolute Firefighting, Big Johnson shirts, or other inappropriate shirts are allowed as this is a family event and you will be representing your department.  The public, along with local TV stations may be present, as extensive community advertising will be done for this specific event.

Teams and helpers will need to be at the muster at 10:00 AM on 06/14/08 (the day of the muster), as there will be a walkthrough, rules briefing, and meeting for everyone involved in the competition.

Participants are encouraged to drink a lot of water the day before the event, and prior to the event.  Bottled water and Pepsi products will be available for free for anyone attending the fire muster and Firefighters’ Olympics event.  No alcohol will be served or allowed at the event.

Two teams will go at a time.  Your team will actually be racing against the clock, but you will be racing at the same time as another team for competitiveness and for the public’s viewing.  Each event is a timed event, and the team with the lowest time wins that event.  A trophy will be awarded for the best team in each event, and all other teams will receive a nice metal and wood plaque for display in their station.

Safety officers will be present on each event to ensure participant safety.  All scores and decisions by the judges/referees/organizers are final.  Failure to abide by the rules will lead to disqualification.  Remember that the public and media will likely be filming at the event, so professionalism and courtesy are a must.

Pass-the-water bucket timed 55-gallon water barrel fill:

Objective:  To be the fastest team to fill the 55 gallon drum using 2 gallon collapsible canvas firefighting ‘buckets’.

How:  2 teams of firefighters will line up, and when the whistle is blown the time starts.  The teams will fill the buckets up at a trough, and then pass the bucket (or run with the bucket) towards a small ‘house’ that is about 8 ft. tall.  Once at the house, the firefighters will throw their water onto their respective side of the roof, where the water will run down the slope of the roof, into gutters, down the gutter downspouts, and into a 55 gallon drum.  Each team has their own trough and drum.  The team that fills the drum to the line the fastest is the winner!

See the diagram and picture below for reference on how this event is played.

Firefighter 165 pound dummy drag:

Objective:  To be the fastest team to pull the 165 pound dummy in a relay style event.

How:  2 teams of firefighters will line up, and when the whistle is blown the time starts.  The firefighter #1 will pull the dummy down the length of the course, and pass it off to firefighter #2.  Firefighter #2 will pull the dummy back to the start/finish line.  Firefighter #3 will pull the dummy to firefighter #4, and Firefighter #4 will pull the dummy to the start/finish line.  The team that finishes the event the fastest is the winner!

See the diagram and picture below for reference on how this event is played.

Note:  no gear will need to be worn except your helmet.

Arial keg barrel fire-hose-stream push:

Objective:  To be the fastest team to push the keg barrel, that is suspended between 2 telephone poles, towards your opponent’s side; using only a hose stream from a hand line.

How:  2 teams of firefighters will lineup, and when the whistle is blown the time starts.  The teams will open their respective nozzles, and spray their water stream at the empty keg, which is suspended in the air.  They will use the hose stream to ‘push’ the keg towards the other team.  The team that pushes the keg towards the other team the fastest is the winner!
